A vanity is six to ten pieces and takes one or two days. Doors and drawer fronts travel out to the booth, the carcass gets sprayed in position, and the room returns with a hard, moisture-tolerant finish.
Most houses here have two or three of them. The post-war bungalows in Farewell and Donevan have one small vanity, while the newer builds off Britannia Avenue have a main bathroom, an ensuite and a powder room, and doing all three during one cabinet painting visit costs far less than three separate trips.
Bathrooms Are Harder On A Finish Than Kitchens
Steam is what makes bathroom cabinet painting different. A bathroom swings from dry to saturated twice a day, water sits on the counter edge and runs down the door face, and hot tools get set on the drawer fronts. A soft coating gives up at the bottom edge of the door first.
Cabinet painting for a vanity therefore uses a hard topcoat and a primer chosen for the substrate rather than for speed. Edges and the underside of the counter apron get the same coats as the fronts, because that is where water travels.
Thermofoil Vanities Are Very Common And Often Failing
Builder vanities from about 1998 onward are usually thermofoil over fibreboard, which sets the whole cabinet painting approach. Steam is exactly what lifts thermofoil, so a vanity is usually the first place in a house where that skin starts peeling, typically at the top edge of a door or around the sink cutout.
Intact thermofoil takes a bonding primer and paints well. Lifted thermofoil needs stripping, or else a fresh door, as set out in full under thermofoil, melamine and laminate cabinet painting. We check the edges closely before quoting cabinet painting on any vanity.
A Vanity Is A Good Way To Test A Colour
Small rooms are cheap places to experiment with a cabinet painting colour. Painting a powder room vanity in the deep green or navy under consideration for a kitchen island costs a fraction of the kitchen and answers the question properly, because the colour is on a real door in real light.
Plenty of people do exactly that before committing to two-tone kitchen work. The sample door route is quicker still, and both are discussed at the visit.
Bundling Vanities With A Kitchen Saves Money
Setup is most of the cost of cabinet painting on a small job. Masking, containment and a booth run happen once whether there are eight doors or fifty, so adding vanities to a kitchen quote is cheap, while booking a vanity on its own carries the full minimum.
The same logic covers a laundry cupboard, a mudroom bench or a linen cabinet done in the same week. Those are described on the pantry, laundry and built-in cabinet painting page, and grouping them into one cabinet painting visit is nearly always the cheaper route.
